John Tanner

Chief Legal Officer and Claims Leader

John serves as Chief Legal Officer to CAC Specialty, where his responsibilities include negotiating complex and innovative insurance solutions and leading the claims advocacy and litigation support team.

John brings more than 22 years of litigation and insurance coverage experience, most recently serving as executive vice president and division counsel to the financial services division of McGriff, Seibels & Williams, Inc. John previously practiced law in the securities litigation practice group of Alston & Bird, LLP where he defended directors and officers in shareholder class action and derivative litigation defense and represented large law firms in complicated legal malpractice cases.

John is recognized as an expert in insurance coverage and is widely published in industry-leading trade journals and magazines, including articles in Risk Management magazine, Insurance Journal, the Securities Litigation Journal, Business Law Today, the ACC Docket, and The National Law Review. In 2009, he received the Association of Corporate Counsel Robert I. Townsend, Jr. Member of the Year Award, the highest honor awarded to an individual ACC member; he received recognition in 2014 by the Atlanta Business Chronicle as one of Georgia’s top in-house attorneys to help business leaders navigate complex transactions, negotiate contracts and manage risk.

John received his law degree, magna cum laude, from Georgia State University College of Law. He was a Presidential Scholarship recipient at Maryville College in Tennessee where he received a bachelor’s degree, cum laude, in history. John studied at Kansai University in Osaka, Japan, and participated in the Japan Exchange & Teaching Program for a year prior to law school.
